Lee was born in Johannesburg where she grew up finding it found it very hard to connect with people. Never being able to pinpoint the reasons, she found herself becoming a people pleaser – trying to fit in.
Recently diagnosed to be on the spectrum, with dyslexia and mild asperges, Lee has been forced to make changes. Interactions with people were intimidating with communication difficult. Over time she has learnt the correct social queues.
Unfortunately for Lee, this led to her getting into an abusive relationship. For many, this is a terrible situation to find yourself in – this was no different for Lee. With no idea how to escape – it was a tragic day that allowed her to seek her freedom! “News that my life changed was when I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Something that could have ended my life was the pivotal moment that led to my freedom.” By 2014 she was cancer free and decided a change was needed in her life! She had been given a second chance at life. Hers and in general, she needed to take advantage of this!
Lee was not an athletic person growing up, so training was something very new to her. “Originally, I started with body weight training, calisthenics”. As she started to see the kind of results she wanted – she was then determined to see what other boundaries she could push. “I started bodybuilding after my chemotherapy. At first it was just a way to get healthy again. But I discovered I was good at it. I started winning competitions. I got hooked. My boyfriend didn’t like it. He thought it made me less desirable. But the worse our relationship got, the more I focused on working out”.
This was where she started competing. Lee competed in her first show after 6 months of training and admits she didn’t know what she was doing, arriving with a handmade bikini and no tan on! Somehow, she still took third place! Imagine if she was prepared!! This was the catalyst she needed that led her down the bodybuilding route. While her (now) ex didn’t like this element of her new life and tried to stop her from training. However, the more he said no, the more she wanted to, this eventually gave Lee the strength to start to see what he was doing to her. Once he kicked her out the pursuit into bodybuilding only increased.
“It just felt so great to be recognized for something. I was really, really good at it. And the bodybuilding community is so great. They’re some of the least judgmental people because they’re used to being judged all the time. For the first few years I was really self-conscious about my body. But I’ve gotten to the point where the small comments don’t really bother me anymore: ‘ew,’ gross,’ ‘disgusting’– things like that. I can usually block people out if they can’t type more than a sentence. But occasionally the criticism sinks in. It still hurts when people question my gender. Or my sexuality. And I’ve had some awkward Tinder dates. The last guy said: ‘Holy fuck, you’re bigger than I thought you’d be.’ But despite all this, I’ve gotten comfortable in my own skin.

Lee has 3 national titles in bodybuilding and 5 international titles to her name, along with 3 national records in powerlifting. Lee received her IFBB pro card in London in 2019 when she grabbed the runner-up spot at the WPD London Classic under the NPC banner.
“I love this industry and the inner strength that it gives you. Bodybuilding is a mental sport in many ways, and I wouldn’t be the person I am without it.
I actually feel more feminine now than I did growing up. I was always skinny. I never had breasts. I didn’t ever feel like a natural woman. But what is natural? Is make-up natural? Or Botox? Or fillers? Or breast implants? All of us are flawed. My mask might be different than other people, but we all hide behind something. I just hide behind my muscles.”
